Schlemmer for Life

I never thought I'd be mentioning Oskar Schlemmer's Das Triadisches Ballet again on the blog after that very memorable Lie Sang Bong collection that blew my little brain out with its construction, use of colours and textures.  Turns out there's someone else whose love for the Bauhaus painter, sculptor and designer literally informs her entire body of work.  Sonia Biacchi who I discovered yesterday via work, is a costume designer and researcher who works in Giudecca, Venice for the Theatre Research Centre which she founded in the early 80s.  She uses mainly rigid materials like papier-mâché, wood, glass, metal, tyre inner tubes and nautical materials to create her costumes that are primarily used for dance and theatre but have recently been getting some editorial press.

Her pieces of course are purely for the eye and beholder of aesthetics but in a shoot would serve to dramatise the context instantly when placed next to more wearable pieces.  I said Lie Sang Bong took the Schlemmer theme and ran away with it but Biacchi has taken his approach to forms and let that be the constant recurring influence in her work.  I'm hoping I'll see her work seep into editorials with a crash and a bang soon....
