Q.
Where have you been (recently)?
A.
Seen anything amazing lately?
My dude Mas “the horse” Hino who works in the shop, too, is building a really cool carved top bass right now, so I’m very intrigued by that. And I’ve been getting deeper into my vinyl collection and getting inspired by Gean Clark, John Entwistle, Ronnie Wood and the new PJ Harvey record. Ronnie Wood is a huge inspiration for me, and the vibe in my guitars. His paintings are awesome — a just-go-for-it-and-think-about-it-later, or-not kind of vibe.
Where can I see it (and when)?
Cobra guitars is on Third Street between First and Second Ave. Every guitar I build, I put all my heart and vibe into, and build one at a time so each one has its own personality. When Caveman is playing, I always make sure to have a few guitars and basses on hand. They kind of pop up here and there in NYC, so its always fun to point one out. You can see the guitars at cobraguitars.com, and I always post pictures of what I’m working on on our Facebook page at facebook.com/cobraguitars .
Where are you headed? What’s next on the agenda?
Taking Cobra guitars and Caveman to the top, working on new models now that are gonna really stand out in a classy way. Also working with LaBella strings on custom Cobra guitar strings. There are a few special collaborations in the works that are really gonna step it up. Caveman is getting ready for an August tour with the War on Drugs in the Midwest, and our new record will be out Sept. 13.
I feel in NYC you have to be the best at whatever your doing cheap coach purses, and put your heart into every little detail.
What are you working on right now?
I just finished a semi-hollow bass called the Beachcave, and I’m building a hollow-body guitar now called the Caveyork. I was born in New York City, so the city is a huge inspiration to me, and a vibe I put into the guitars I build. We also just finished our Caveman record! Lastly, I’m working on a collaboration shop with one of my closest friends, Robert James, who makes the finest men’s wear in NYC, on Orchard street. The team that makes Cobra guitars is really special.
Jimmy “Cobra” Carbonetti is something of a downtown urban legend. A scruffy cheap coach purses, smart-mouthed kid with a sharp wit — and memorable mutton chops — Cobra is yet another one of those natives seemingly too young to be as accomplished as he is. He is the proprietor of Cobra Guitars, a custom guitar shop in the East Village, and he strums his own creations in the acclaimed rock band Caveman. Rumor has it that the entire music industry is chasing after Caveman, waving record contracts, but the gaggle of mischievous man-boys, led by a singer with an I.Q. purported to be off the charts, refuses to sign anything. Obscenely talented, and airtight in performance delivery, Caveman is finally getting over its commitment phobia cheap coach purses, releasing its first album, “CoCo Beware,” this fall. Should you cross paths with Cobra Carbonetti, in his uniform of shirt sleeves, vests and cowboy boots, beware of his back-snapping bear hug.
